This might have slipped through the cracks somehow in the last little while, but Barley’s in Greenville was recently named by Stone Brewing Company as the Most Arrogant Bar in America. Each year, Stone holds a weeklong nationwide competition to find a beer bar that sells the most pints of its Bastard beers. In the past, this meant Arrogant Bastard, Oaked Arrogant Bastard, and Double Bastard. This year, that also included a Double Dry Hopped Bastard and Lucky Bastard. This year, Barley’s was the big winner, selling more than any other of the 166 participating bars.
Last year’s winner was the Raleigh Times Bar in Raleigh, North Carolina. Previously, two bars in Charlotte, North Carolina had won the title. The win by Barley’s snaps the North Carolina streak at 3 and helps to continue to put Greenville on the map in terms of beer destinations.
So, what happens now? Well, the win calls for an epic party. Greg Koch, CEO and co-founder of Stone will be coming to Greenville to celebrate. Schedules are still being worked out, but expect the festivity to happen in April. If it is anything like in prior years, expect a crazy Stone beer lineup. At last year’s celebration in Raleigh for example, Koch offered a vertical tasting of 2005-2011 Double Bastard Ale vintages.
Until then, you can still stop by Barley’s and celebrate by having a pint or three, and by buying a t-shirt. Expect an official announcement in the very near future.
