Tennis, anyone? Qualifying kicks off this weekend for the annual Family Circle Cup on Daniel Island near Charleston. Since the 1970s, this women’s professional tournament has delighted folks in the Lowcountry; first in Hilton Head and now in Charleston. Being a big tennis fan myself, it’s a great way to spend a day. And now, besides seeing some of the top female tennis players on the planet and enjoying nice weather (fingers crossed for this year), there is another reason to go.
For the second straight year, Holy City Brewing has brewed a beer just for the event. Dubbed the Holy City Slam, this 5.8% American Pale Ale boasts wheat and pale malts, and is single hopped with Citra. It won’t be overly bitter, and should give patrons a nice citrus nose and refreshing taste. This year’s version differs slightly from last year as no wheat was included for the 2012 version. Last year’s edition also featured Cascade and Chinook hops and clocked in at about 5%.
You might be able to find this beer in a few places in Charleston other than at the Family Circle Cup, but don’t expect to. The vast majority of the batch was allocated especially for the event. The tournament runs through April 7th and will feature top players such as Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Jelena Jankovic, and Samantha Stosur.
