The government shutdown of 16 days hardly slowed down River Rat Brewery in Columbia. This morning, the brewery received federal approval of its Brewer’s Notice. That means that the brewery now holds a federal license to brew beer. The brewery’s application was filed in late September and flew through the approval process despite the shutdown.
The brewery continues to perform construction related activities on its space on Shop Road near Williams-Brice Stadium and things are coming along well according to owner Mike Tourville. The brewery has also received its equipment and the setup and plumbing work is under way.
Next up for the Columbia brewery will be its state license, which is expected to fly through the application process. While no firm date has been set for a grand opening, South Carolina could be seeing its next new brewery by the end of the year.
*Full Disclosure: River Rat Brewery LLC is a legal client of mine. I’m thrilled by their progress so far in this endeavor.
